Gear S2 Vs. the Gear Fit 2

Samsung is a leading name in the smartwatch sector these days, and most people have considered at least one Samsung device in the past year when searching for a capable smartwatch to wear on their wrist when leaving the house. There are two major options worth considering today if you’re looking for a good budget smartwatch for fitness tracking and notification management, the Gear Fit 2 and the Gear S2. Each watch has its strengths and weaknesses, and you’ll have to read through this fitness tracker review to learn which is right for you.

Their Major Differences

Any good fitness tracker comparison looks at the differences of the two devices as simply as possible, and that’s what we did here for the Gear S2 and Gear Fit 2 comparison. Each of the two watches is very similar, but they have some key differences as well. Read on to find out what those differences are, and what you can expect from the two watches during use.

Prices are Comparable

While the Gear Fit2 was more expensive than the Gear S2 when it was first released, now prices have come down and both smartwatches are around the same cost. During our fitness tracker comparison we couldn’t find a major difference with either option, and we recommend you look at the other features when choosing which smartwatch you’re interested in.

Battery Life

The Fit2 comes with an extra day of battery life

Battery life is a pretty important consideration, especially if you’re traveling somewhere where you won’t have access to a charging station for a few days. When doing our fitness tracker comparison, we wanted to really test out battery life on the two devices. What we found was that the Gear Fit2 lasts about one day longer than the Charge S2 during regular use. You can expect between 3 and 4 days of battery life on the Fit 2 and around 2 to 3 days on the S2 during regular use.

Cellular Service

If making and taking calls from your smartwatch itself, not a cell phone, is important to you, you need to look closely at the Samsung Gear S2. This more standard smartwatch comes with the option to have its own SIM card, which means that you can take and make phone calls and it will have its own number. Adding the watch to your phone plan will come with an added fee though and a set of Bluetooth headphones must be paired with the smartwatch to enjoy voice communication. The Gear Fit2 doesn’t come with the ability to have its own SIM card, and can only be used to manage calls when it’s connected to a compatible smartphone.

Size

While putting together this fitness tracker review we noticed both smartwatches are attractive in their own way, but each is very different. The Fit 2 is longer and sleeker with a 1.5 inch screen and a rectangular screen resolution. The Gear S2 is more square shaped with a 1.2 inch screen and a square resolution. The smartwatch that you like best is really up to personal preference and you’ll need to choose the option that looks best to you.

The Need for a Connected Smartphone

The Gear S2 comes with a built-in application manager

Most smartwatch owners have a compatible smartphone to go along with the watch, but with some watches like the Samsung Gear S2 it’s not as necessary as it once was. It’s possible to do just about everything without a smartphone at all. The S2 comes with a built-in application manager so you can easily add more apps to your device without connecting a smartphone at all. The Gear Fit2 on the other hand, relies on a smartphone to get new applications. You connect it to your smartphone and use the Fit2 companion app to add new applications to your device. If you have a smartphone to work with this probably isn’t a big deal, however, buyers interested in a standalone device will want to pick up the Samsung Gear S2.

How They are the Same

It’s true that the Gear S2 and the Gear Fit 2 are different in quite a few ways, they have many of the same capabilities as qualities as well. Both of the watches feature top quality AMOLED displays for example, and both are exceptional for fitness tracking or smartphone tracking. If you’re looking for a good companion tool for your smartphone, both watches do the job exceptionally well.

Built in GPS and Heartrate Monitoring

During out fitness tracker review we were impressed with the fitness tracking capabilities of each of these smartwatches. Both the Samsung Gear S2 and the Fit 2 come with built-in heart rate monitors and they have built-in GPS tracking as well. They feature accelerometers and can pick up on most forms of movement. Whether you just want a quick reminder letting you know to get moving once again, you want to track your steps, you want information on the floors you’ve gone up or down in a day, or you just want accurate tracking for bike trips or runs, these smartwatches are both up to the task. They sync up with smartphone apps to report all your key information, and will help you keep track of every single workout that you go through to help you track your progress.

Manage Your Music

Wither either watch you can load up your favorite songs right onto the device and play them through Bluetooth headphones wherever you go. Both watches feature 4GB of built-in storage, and will hold up to 500 songs. Easily swap through playlists, jump from one song to the next and make the most out of your smartwatch no matter what you are doing.

Help with Dieting

You can even use these smartwatches to track your diet and make sure you aren’t cheating too much. Enter calorie information about the food you are eating into the smartwatch, and instantly track your progress toward a healthier you over time.

Minor Water Resistance

Both of these smartwatches are IP68 water resistant, which means they can be submerged for up to 30 minutes in a depth no lower than 1.5 meters or 4.9 feet down. That means you could use either one in a lap pool, but would need to take care not to do any diving with these devices on your wrist.

If you’re looking for a smartwatch that can make and take calls for you without a phone at all the Gear S2 is the best option for you. You might also enjoy the ability to manage your apps without a phone on the Gear S2. If you’re after a watch with the longest possible battery life, The Fit 2 is the better of the two options with an added day of power. Other than those differences, the two smartwatches are very similar and you should decide on an option depending on the shape and look that you like the best.
